What is WCAG?
The WCAG or Web Content Accessibility Guidelines external link offer underlying guidelines for basic recommendations on building Web content in a manner that is accessible to all users, irrespective of their disabilities and/or abilities.
Currently in version 2.1, the WCAG were built to operate independently of any existing technology and with a view to straightforward testing and validation for purposes of correct application.
Who benefits from application?
Any user needing to access specific content on a page or application. The benefit is universal. By implementing the WCAG, users with a disability benefit, as do the elderly, pre-literacy children, functional illiterates, persons with a temporary disability or difficulty, and users without disabilities as well.
The basic idea is to provide access to the content provided to any persons, irrespective of his or her abilities and/or disabilities.
Note: According to the Brazilian Inclusion Act (LBI - Lei Brasileira de Inclusão) external link - PDF file in portuguese, any company with registered offices in Brazil must adhere to the international recommendations on accessibility, represented, in this case, by the WCAG.
Note 2: Please refer to the laws of your country. Some examples:
About Accessibility Toolkit
This material was produced with a view to facilitating understanding of the WCAG. Studying all 61 success criteria is not possible for most people involved in developing digital projects (sites and applications) and this toolkit is aimed at meeting that need.
The idea is to transform originally dense and complex content into something readily assimilable, in understandable terms.
Development and creation process
The entire development and creation process is described in this article on the UX Blog external link (in Brazilian Portuguese).
If you use the toolkit in any way, send us feedback (through comments to the article) and let us know the extent to which it has contributed (or has not contributed) to your project/process.
